Video: the Tiger Woods “Jesus” shot

by Mathew on August 20, 2008 · Comments

I have to agree with Steve Rubel of Micropersuasion, whose post I came across on Twitter: this video by Electronic Arts and Tiger Woods — a response to a YouTube video posted by a fan of the EA Tiger Woods golf game about a seemingly impossible shot — is a great idea, and a great ad for the game as well. Kudos to whoever came up with it.

wow. this is an amazing vid! props to the ones who made this!
  • very nice trick :) & absolutely great video
  • I'm with jreneau on this one -- that is indeed Exhibit A. I wish more companies would do that instead of firing up the legal outrage machine. As to cynicism... I wouldn't think any marketing department to be that clever, honestly.
  • I think Jesus would've used the force. Walking on water is a bit old school now...
  • I assumed that the whole thing was set up. That the 'Levinator25' video was manufactured, and the subsequent ad created as a response to it. That said, Levinator25 has been on YouTube for over a year, apparently. Mind you, EA could probably convince YouTube to manufacture an 'old' user account with enough cash.
  • Ah, Darren -- so cynical. I actually thought the same thing :-) But it looks like it's for real.
  • It's a shame he got a two-stroke penalty (he grounded his club in the hazard).
  • Nice catch, Glen :-)

A respected consultant on business brand and image asked me the other day what I thought the right strategy was for companies on YouTube. This video is Exhibit A. Respond to the conversation, keep it real and raw, and don't take yourself too seriously. One of the best uses of YouTube marketing I've seen. Of course, it doesn't hurt to hire Tiger Woods to make your viral video. Now if only Smith and Wesson would make an ad starring Leeroy Jenkins, then we'd have an innovative web video ad campaign.
  • Hehe that is pretty awesome. I love the end, it's not a glitch, he's just that good.
