The Canuck iPhone: Apple doesn’t care

Just for the record, I think the Rogers data plans for the new Canadian version of the iPhone are crap, and I’ve said so a number of times. I’m not here to apologize for the company, or anything like that, and I would love it if someone could wave a magic wand and produce a better plan. But at the same time, I think the idea that Apple cares enough to step in and threaten Rogers by promising to delay shipments of iPhones or send them elsewhere is… well, ridiculous. Do I know for sure whether the report at Smithereens is true or not? No. But I just find it hard to believe that Apple cares much what Rogers charges for the iPhone at this point.

Does Apple care what providers charge for the Jesus phone? Sure it does, because it wants to generate as much demand for the handsets as possible. That’s why it negotiated so hard with AT&T before the launch in the U.S., and no doubt negotiated pretty firmly with Rogers as well, in advance of the Canadian launch. But don’t you think the two companies would have come to an agreement about what Rogers would charge? The two sides have reportedly been negotiating for months. (Update: A Rogers spokesperson says inventory levels haven’t changed).

For Apple to start yanking shipments at this point would be a bizarre move for the company to make, and would likely open the company up to legal claims by Rogers, depending on the terms of their agreement. I know that the popular mythos about Apple is that Steve Jobs gets to do whatever he wants, and strides around the globe dispensing goodies — or lumps of coal — at his whim, like Santa Claus in a black turtleneck, but I just don’t think that’s how things really work. At this point, I think that would-be Canadian iPhone users are on their own.

  • As a Canadian, who was waiting patiently for July 11th, I hope this is true...but likely, it's BS...and could possibly be a ploy, for Apple to say

    "You better hurry to Rogers, and get your iPhone, cause Rogers might run out...if we cut them off...so buy, buy now, buy soon, before there aren't any left."
  • Did anyone who signed the ruinediphone.com petition *really* think that Apple would step in and save them from Rogers' pricing? I certainly didn't. The best way for consumers to get around the horrid plans is to just not buy the iPhone until more reasonable rates come to market.

    You are probably correct that Apple doesn't give a damn about what we pay for mobile data in Canada, but I think you're underestimating the negative effect this will have on Apple's brand in this country. A few horror stories in the media about parents facing $1,000+ bills for their teenager's iPhone can't help either Apple or Rogers and may very well get noticed outside Canada. Fortunately for Rogers they're a defacto monopoly, so they don't care. Unfortunately for Apple they're constantly having to justify their pricing, and Rogers' gouging is going to stick to both parties. I suspect this has caught Apple by surprise, and they're probably wondering if it's too late to detach themselves from Rogers and wait for a new GSM entrant -- hopefully next year. The only action we (as consumers) can really take is to just not buy the thing.
  • a $1000 bill? WOW. That is insane. I guess it'd be really easy to do if you didn't have a data plan.

    Personally I'm not sure what all the excitement is about the iphone.

    Rogers tried to bill me for a total of $6,000 over two months on Blackberry usage. This is without using any Web access, sending photos or even opening attachments. Somehow they had me using on average 10mb a day for something they were never able to identify. After many threats of sending me to collection I finally had them waive the charges. TWO MONTHS IN A ROW. Bottom line: no unlimited data, no purchase. Oh and a mandatory 3-year contract? Eat my shorts Rogers (and, by proxy, Apple).
