Jason Calacanis escapes from AOHell

Erstwhile Weblogs Inc. supremo and Netscape revamper Jason Calacanis has confirmed on his blog that he has left AOL, in the wake of the departure of Jon Miller, whom he described as his “mentor.” As he told the New York Times in a brief interview: “I’m not inclined to start over with a new guy.” Mike Arrington had the news first on TechCrunch — except it wasn’t news, it was only a rumour. I wonder if Mike is a little bent about the fact that Jason gave his first official comments to the Old Grey Lady. And I thought Jason was all about the new media. I wrote about what I think Jason should do here, and my friend Rob Hyndman has some thoughts here.

  • Although Mike Arrington is as much of an "insider" as anyone else, the way the NYT scooped the story has as much to do with connections as anything else.

Apparently the author of the story, Saul, I think his name is, is tight with J-Cal, and that's how he got the scoop before even Mr. calacanis blogged about it.

That's interesting, Tony. Just out of curiosity, how do you know that?
  • That *is* pretty interesting! :)

All smarminess aside, I basically got on the horn (and by horn, I mean instant message) with someone close to the situation.

I should actually post about it, since the NYT got it right (contrary to my original post)

FYI: Cnet picked up our comments on the whole situation (can I get a "yay Canada?")

[Yes, I already emailed them about how they mispelled your name ;) ]
