Crowdsourcing: Top iPhone apps

by Mathew on June 9, 2009 · Comments

I got an iPhone recently (no, not one of the fancy new ones) and so I asked people on Twitter and at work to tell me their absolute must-have favourite apps (I got an iPhone in part because the paper I work for has its own shiny new iPhone app, which was kind of my idea). So I thought I would pull together a list of the most suggested apps:

Social Media: Tweetie, Twitterfon, Tumblr, Facebook, Reportage

Food: Urbanspoon, Epicurious, TimmyMe (Canadian)

Radio: NPR Public Radio Tuner, Wunderradio, Last.fm

Tools: Google Earth, WeatherEye, Shazam. Red Rocket (Canadian)

Saving: Evernote, Instapaper

Reading: Stanza, Shortcovers, Kindle

RSS: NetNewsWire, Byline

Productivity: eWallet, Things, Simplify, iPassword

Pictures: QuadCamera, CameraBag, DarkSlide

Games: FlightControl, Labyrinth, Super Monkey Ball, Tetris, Scrabble, Wolfenstein, Tap Tap Revenge

Feel free to leave your favourites or any other thoughts in a comment.

  • The only iPhone game I play (having abandoned 8 or 10 others) consistently is Real Soccer 2009. It's remarkably robust for an iPhone app.
  • Thanks, Darren.
  • If you look at my blog post from April: http://stewartandmarasodyssey.blogspot.com/2009... I reviewed a number of apps my husband and I use everyday on our iPhones. We travel full time, and are connected at the hip with our phones. Welcome to iPhone!
  • Thanks, Mara. I'll take a look.

I love this program by a fellow Victorian called Get Home: http://bit.ly/gethome . It's pretty simple: it helps you find your way home from wherever you happen to be. Useful for when you get lost on long walks (as I tend to do).
  • Thanks.

Its called Public Radio Tuner, not NPR Tuner, but no matter the tag, I agree, its a great app.
  • Thanks, Jon.

Not sure on the status of an iphone app for this one. And currently it only runs on MAC OS X... but it does definitely speak to mention crowd sourcing and real time around live events. Give it a look see.

  • Hi Mathew, I'm glad you finally got an iPhone. I remember you mentioning you wanted one but had a Blackberry for work. I'm a big fan of the Panorama application... and Bejeweled 2.
