A new theme: Defending my Thesis

by Mathew on September 14, 2008 · Comments

Maybe it’s the reverse of spring cleaning, but I’ve been feeling a yen for a new blog theme, and I finally took the plunge. I looked around at a bunch of different Wordpress designs, and saw many that I liked, but in the end I went with the excellent Thesis theme from Chris Pearson. I was a big fan of his Cutline theme, and used that for some time before moving to my most recent theme — The Morning After. I tinkered with it and customized it quite a bit, and learned a lot about CSS along the way, but in the end I wasn’t really happy with it, and Thesis fit my needs perfectly. Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments, and if you’re reading this through your RSS reader then, well… never mind :-)

  • I'm a little late to this party (didn't realize you changed the theme until today), but it's cool to see Thesis popping up in other places on the web.

I made the decision to go with it for Eat Sleep Publish a while back and I'm really happy with it. My only real complaint is that it doesn't come with the "edit this post" links that most themes do - which I could fix, of course, I'm just lazy.
  • Actually, I think your blog was one of the first ones that got me thinking about Thesis as a theme. And I know what you mean about the "edit post" link -- one of the first tweaks I made was to add that.
  • Change is good! I like it!

Looks great Mathew. I'm a big fan of Pearson as well.
  • Just a "hello" from a fellow fan of Thesis.

Interesting post on DFW. I hadn't heard about that before. Such a shame. Unfortunately, I don't think it is that uncommon for successful people to feel like frauds or fakes. Truly sad when those feelings lead to suicide.

To leave on a positive note, I'm glad you like Thesis. If you want to pick up a tip or two, be sure to check out my Thesis blog.
  • Hey matthew,

I like this design. As a matter of fact I bookmarked the site last week and I was thinking about it. My stumbling block is that there are still so many free themes out there, I can't see paying for one, YET. Maybe if I had your traffic numbers I might consider a custom theme, but until then I'll stick with the freebies.
  • I felt much the same, Mike -- but I just couldn't find the combination of features I was looking for. I guess some things are worth paying for :-)

Rotating photos? It certainly LOOKS as though you're just putting up an uncessary shot of an anonymous woman. Why would you need to do that? How long does it take to rotate, against the length of time it takes to read one paragraph of test?

OK, so they are different each time you come back. Will have to see if one can select the photos that appear, as you could delete that one. Pardon the typo above on "unnecessary".
  • Yes, the theme rotates through whatever photos you place in a specific folder. You can also put code in place of the photos, so that you can embed a video or some other content, and you can specify which content based on the page it appears in as well.
  • Nice! I like your sunset pic (that has since rotated).

I'm using Thesis too, now I just ned to style my DISQUS comments.
  • Maybe I'll become more argumentative too, Nav :-)
  • Heh - I thought you were about to embark on a new approach in which you would be more argumentative! But I like the new theme - very clean, and the rotating photos are cool.
