Being able to read the full paper for much less than a physical subscription is quite a desirable deal. I do, however, think that the paywall is frustrating and can easily alienate readers. It's akin to DRM on music - if protecting your business model involves hampering the consumer experience, something is wrong. If there were some sort of 'DRM-Free' approach that worked, I think papers would be doing a lot better with this internet thing.
