What’s the GDP of Harry Potter?

by Mathew on July 6, 2007 · Comments

from Paul Kedrosky comes this interesting factoid:

  • economic value of Harry Potter (books and movies): $7.2-billion
  • gross domestic product of Afghanistan: $7.2-billion

Of course, as a commenter notes on Paul’s blog, the Afghan number would be significantly higher if revenue from the heroin trade were included.

  • Very interesting fact. I wonder how Harry Potter stacks up when we start looking at measures like job creation or productivity? Quite favorably, I'd imagine.

True, the Afghan number would be higher if the drug trade was included, but what about HP merchandise or the incremental revenue generated for the book stores by all the additional foot traffic?

    Thanks for sharing this.
