According to a recent book called Broadband Scandal, the telcos got all kinds of favourable deals from the U.S. government a decade or so ago, in part by promising that everyone would soon have a super-fast connection capable of handling phone calls, TV-style programming and so on. Now it seems as though they are asking for the ability to charge more for delivering what should already be here. [...]

Yeah, I was sort of interested as well, but the pre-release comments I've seen all make the point that this guy was a bystander. He was neither one of the criminal telecom analysts sorts, nor was he really privy to all that much good, juicy venality. Where's the fun in reading that?

[...] Update (2006-02-01): Mathew has uncovered more blog coverage (Gordon Cook here, Richard Stastny here, and David Isenberg here) of Kushnick’s new book, and notes the tie-in to telecom claims in the current net neutrality debate: “And it definitely sheds a different kind of light on their repeated claims that Internet content companies should be paying more for access to their pipes … It sounds to me like U.S. consumers have already paid for it several times over.” The book now has a blog here.
